Power // Energy: Mapping the Thickened Ground of Labor

Behind flanks of wind turbines, the Mount Storm Power Station churns itself into oblivion. The archives above form the contextual ground for my design thesis — to be completed in Spring 2025. The research investigates the industrial condition of Mount Storm through the landscape symptoms produced by over a century of single-resource extraction — first of timber, then of coal. These symptoms — thermal pollution, acid mine drainage, stunted evergreens and fish — have been excused by its hidden position high in the Appalachians, yet the site is linked to our nation’s capital via the Potomac River and electric grid. The design work will bring Mount Storm’s perverse ecologies to light.
